THE MIKADO
Brief descriptions of the
leading characters
THE MIKADO OF JAPAN An imposing
and dominant man who expects people to submit to his laws without
question - apart from Katisha, whom he cannot control.
NANKI-POO The son and heir
to the Mikado, in love with Yum-Yum. He fears his father
and is terrified of Katisha.
KO-KO Weedy little chap trying
to cope with his newly exalted position. He has been
trying to avoid executing anyone, because he hasn't the heart to
do it.
POOH-BAH A pompous, overbearing
and privileged bore who treats everyone as underlings. Intolerant
of young "persons" but open to bribes.
PISH-TUSH Clearly a member
of the Town Council who does his best to conform to the law of the
land and steer others in that direction.
YUM-YUM A pretty and naive
young girl, the ward of Ko-Ko, stuck with the fact that she must
do as he says. In love with Nanki-Poo, but in the pinch
will put herself first.
PITTI-SING Bright young girl,
rather cocky and cheeky. Sister and best friend of Yum-Yum.
PEEP-BO Young girl, bit of
a swot and rather outspoken. Sister of the other two
Little Maids.
KATISHA Mature lady, not beautiful,
bloodthirsty, very domineering and expects to get her own way. Enraged
at losing her potential husband but at the end shows her softer
side for a brief moment.
